CHNA Discussion Groups

Thanks to all for their help in making CHNA's Annual Meeting and Ice Cream Social such a success!  Congratulations to Providence Police Lieutenant John T. Ryan, who received a CHNA Community Service award for his extraordinary work as Commander of District Nine.  Further congratulations go to Wendy Nilsson, who also received a CHNA Community Service award for her exemplary leadership in transforming Brown Street Park into the remarkable asset that it has become.

Historic District Commission

Application for Certificate of Appropriateness (PDF)
Standards & Guidelines (PDF)

Find out more about what it means to live in a historical district. The HDC Chairman, Glen Fontecchio and Principal Planner, Jason Martin met with CHNA to hear an overview of the services the HDC provides and how energy conservation plays a part in historical design. They provided us with two documents to help potential and current residents understand the role they play. In the meantime, with new energy materials and designs presented more readily, we are hoping to see a good fit for College Hill historical design soon.

NATIONAL GRID UPDATE

We are pleased to report that on or about July 21, 2009, Governor Donald L. Carcieri signed legislation previously approved by the House and Senate that authorizes the state to regulate the installation and relocation of residential gas meters.  Absent this legislation, National Grid would have continued to cause very significant damage throughout the city and state pursuant to its practice of installing and relocating large and unsightly high pressure gas meters on external private home facades without the owners' consent.  Approval of this legislation represents a remarkable effort by West Broadway Neighborhood Association and its many supporters.

PPS ANOUNCES ITS 2009 TEN MOST ENDANGERED PROPERTIES IN PROVIDENCE

On May 6, 2009, the Providence Preservation Society announced its 2009 list of ten Most Endangered Properties in Providence.  Descriptions of the properties can be reviewed on the PPS website at http://wiki.ppsri.org/tiki-index.php.   We urge community support for the preservation of the ten important structures that PPS has identified, as well as for the many more similarly endangered historic structures throughout the city and state.
